University of Alabama Rural Health Scholars Summer Program for current 11th graders

The Rural Health Scholars Program is conducted by the UA College of Community Health Sciences, a branch of the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Rural Health Scholars live on the UA campus during a 5-week summer program prior to their senior year. Chosen based on academic achievement and interest in rural health care, these outstanding high school juniors from rural areas take two courses for college credit (English and Chemistry) and participate in field trips and lectures related to rural health careers.

Eligibility and Selection

To qualify for the Rural Health Scholars Program

An applicant must be a resident of rural Alabama
Currently a junior in high school
Has a ‘B’ grade point average
Meets UA admissions criteria

Participants will be selected based on their interests, motivation and personal qualities that are most suited for becoming future physicians and other health professionals practicing in a rural community. For these reasons, applicants are asked for a statement of interest, information concerning academic experiences and achievements, and at least two recommendations with one recommendation from someone familiar with your academic record.

Alabama State University Oracle Academy

Alabama State University’s College of Business Administration (COBA) and the Oracle Academy are partnering to host an Open Forum Day on Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. in the auditorium of the Ralph D. Abernathy College of Education Building.
The forum’s topic is “Are You Ready for Graduation?” Oracle representatives will discuss transforming existing assignments into a technology portfolio that impresses, discovering general skills that technology leaders such as Oracle tend to look for when hiring and writing an effective resume cover letter.
The forum targets students studying computer science/engineering, information management, or management information systems and who want to ready themselves for eventual employment in these fields. The forum is not just for seniors and juniors, in fact, first and second-year students are strongly encouraged to attend.
“The aptitudes, attitudes, expectations, and learning styles of students (the Net Generation) puts pressure on universities to offer courses that incorporate the state-of-the-art technologies and are practical in nature. Employers now require our graduates to seamlessly transition to the workforce with little or no ‘on-the-job’ training,” said Dr. Le-Quita Booth, dean of the College of Business Administration.
Booth said ASU and COBA are actively seeking new teaching tools for the classroom. “The Oracle Academy has provided COBA students with a special opportunity to learn state-of-art IT skills that are in great demand in the workplace. We are working toward extending the offerings of Oracle based courses in the college through a new certificate program. We are also helping the IT academy at Lee High School implement a course on database using Oracle in their curriculum.”
This year, ASU students will be participating in Oracles’ international competition called ThinkQuest, a competition that challenges students to solve problems using technology.
“Oracle is committed to using its technology and resources to advance education and prepare young students for 21st-century careers,” Booth said.
Oracle is the second largest software company in the world. Its products are used by most of the Fortune 500 companies, the Department of Defense and by federal and state governments.

Alabama A&M University High School Senior Day will afford your student the opportunity to speak with representatives and students from all university departments. The death or disabling injury of a parent in an on-the-job accident usually means that a family’s standard of living is permanently lowered. Kids’ Chance scholarships fund college tuition or technical training to young people whose parent or parents have been permanently disabled or killed on the job. Without help from Kids’ Chance, these young people might not have the opportunity to continue their education.

Conceived by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar in 1992, Kids’ Chance is administered by the Alabama Law Foundation. Kids’ Chance scholarships are funded solely by contributions from corporations, organizations and individuals. To make the future secure for Kids’ Chance and to make larger scholarships available, the Alabama Law Foundation is building an endowment.

Scholarships are announced once a year, and students may apply every year they attend classes. Scholarships range from $500 to $2500. Kids’ Chance has awarded more than 100 scholarships totaling over $375,000 to students studying in colleges and technical schools. Almost 40 Kids’ Chance recipients have graduated, are working on master degrees, or are employed.

The benefits from Kids’ Chance scholarships go beyond improving individual students’ lives. Kids’ Chance graduates are working as lawyers, doctors, nurses, environmental scientists, teachers and counselors. Every day, Kids’ Chance graduates work to make their communities healthy, safe, fair, caring places to live.

Kids’ Chance scholarships certainly help with tuition costs, but they are more than money—they are an investment for a successful future—they are help and hope.

Look at their transcripts
They will need to bring a pen, pencil, and something hard on which to write. Please refer to the senior handbook if you have questions about scholarships before calling. Most of the information that you will ever need is in the handbook that the seniors were given at the end of school last year. If your child needs an additional copy, please send $5.00 with them to school, as they all had to sign for their initial copies.

ACT Fee Waivers are Here!

If your child meets the income requirement, he/she may take the ACT for free two times if he/she is a junior or senior. The deadline for signing up for ACT is AUGUST 12TH. The test date is September 10th. (Some of the kids were thinking the 15th, but it is the 12th.) They can only receive two waivers. If they do not show up, it still counts as one of their two opportunities.

Your child will get schedules, can pay for lockers, and pay for lunches. Go to the auditorium first. If your child is in eighth grade and he/she has not declared a diploma type, they will not get a schedule. You will have to go to the office to fill out the appropriate paperwork.

The upcoming seniors should already have their Senior appointments for portraits. Also, on Honors Day, all seniors class of 2012 were given their handbooks and senior letters. The handbook has all the information that you will need for scholarships and calendar items that you will need to consider for the upcoming year. There were a couple of discrepancies between the handbook and senior letter. As far as senior fees are concerned, the senior letter is the most accurate.
It is imperative that at every progress report and report card period, that you check your child's grades. Entry into college and scholarships will be factored by the grades your child earned up to this point and the 1st semester of the senior year. If you have questions, please call or email me.

Class of 2012/Dual Enrollment

It's that time of year again, when juniors can consider the wonderful opportunity of dual enrollment. These are the requirements:
They have to have completed 11th grade English and the 11th grade
Have a 16 on the ACT or take the Compass test
Have a B average in their high school courses

The courses that students can take for dual enrollment are:
English 101-102 that will count for English 12
Thus, during the senior year, a student will not have to take English 12 and will already have English 101-102 out of the way his/her freshman year of college.
Jeff State offers this in the fall as a 1st block class which students can drive to with a signed release from the parent/guardian. Another option to consider is Wallace Community College because they offer this in two mini-sessions during the summer. I will be discussing this with the students, soon, but I wanted to have parents aware of this, as well.
It is a process, so if your child plans to do it, make sure that he/she gets the forms, and has them signed by the appropriate people(principal, counselor, and superintendent.)
Payment of fees and orientation is usually done in one day. As soon as I hear when that will be, I will post it on the blogspot.
Last year, the tuition for both classes wound up being a little over $600.00. I do not know what the exact tutition will be yet.
This is a once in a lifetime chance to be able to do two things at one time. (Your child will want to do a STARS report, I will show them how, to be sure that the 4 year institution they are considering will transfer the English 101-102 credits from JEFF State or WCCS.)
JEFF State and WCCS are currently the only two colleges that the Chilton County Board of Education recognizes for dual enrollment.
(This is not be be confused with Accelerated program, which allows 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to take college courses. Remember, those do not count toward high school credits, but can be very helpful in getting your child ahead.)

The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts its annual Open House each year in the Spring, at its campus on Wire Road.

If you or anyone that you are interested in a career in veterinary medicine, make plans to attend this annual event.

Junior and senior high school students, as well as college students, can talk with counselors who are helpful in suggesting courses for a future career in veterinary medicine.

Scientific exhibits will include anatomy, ultrasound, small animal surgeries, large animal exhibits, endoscopy, and other veterinary disciplines.

Other activities include college tours, a dog agility course, sheep-herding, an animal art exhibit, petting zoo, Teddy Bear surgery, parade of breeds, and many other attractions.

Students in the 12A homeroom applied to JEFFState on Wednesday. They were also all given a copy of the JEFF State scholarship application to complete. Students in the 12B will be doing the same activities today after the Balfour representatives discuss Senior supplies. During our time together, we discussed Career Cruising.com, FAFSA, and what they must do in order to be ready for college. A handout on the entire presentation was given to each student. I would like to host a FAFSA night here at school for parents who need computer access. If you are interested, please email me with a good time. (I even thought of having it on a Sunday, after lunch, or very early one morning, before everyone has to be at work.) I'm interested in your opinions. There are FAFSA deadlines as early as March 1st. Scholarships for strong candidates who will major in Physics at the University of South Alabama will be offered to start in August of the upcoming academic year. Each semester, the scholarship will pay for up to 16 hours in-state Tuition and Fees and up to $500 reimbursement for textbook purchases.The current value of the scholarship is approximately $8264.00 per academic year, and this amount will increase as tuition and fees increase. For students in good academic standing, this scholarship will cover four years.The recipient may not hold simultaneously any other University scholarships (such as the Presidential Scholarship, etc.).

Robotics

The Isabella Robotics team did a great job this weekend at Auburn. I am so glad that Mr. LeCroy invited me. If your child mentions the Robotics Team, encourage them to participate. It is a great opportunity for your child to become excited about science and math. In addition, they get to visit colleges, work together creatively, and have fun. I personally see the statistics concerning extracurricular activities and students played out everyday. Whether it's robotics or sports, every student, I believe, should be enrolled in an extracurricular activity. Studies show that this type of involvement results in higher grades and fewer dropouts.
Our students represented us well in the competition. They worked together to complete so many tasks. Next year, I hope that we can take more spectators to our competition, as team spirit is factored into the number of points that we get. It's great to be an Isabella Mustang!

Don't forget, all seniors will be applying to Jeff State in Jan. You will want your ACT and GPA to be as high as possible. If you're behind in a class, study hard over Thanksgiving. That extra time could mean at least 10 grand in your hand.
Jeff State will be awarding 20 scholarships this year. The requirements are a ACT of 22 or better with a GPA of 3.0 and above.(4 of our students recieved this scholarship last year.)
One counselor scholarship will be awardsed which a GPA of 3.0 or better is required, but there is no ACT requirement. Whenever the scholarship applications are available (around Jan. 5th), I will be copying them for everyone. Please complete them. All students applying must be a U. S. citizen or provide proper documented residency status.

Awards can be up to $5,000 per year. The scholar could receive up to $20,000 over four years to help complete a bachelor's degree.
To be eligible to compete for the KFC Colonel's Scholars Scholarship, an individual must:
Graduate from high school this academic year (between 12/1/10 and 8/31/11)
Earn a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.75
Plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public, in-state college or university (start date no later than 9/30/11)

I hope that all of you who attended Junior/Senior Parent Information Night had a great time. I know that I learned so many things about the different college and the military. It was also encouraging to hear of some of the things that many of our students are already doing. Some of the main highlights from our meeting were:
1. Apply for as many scholarships as you can.
2. Figure out which college setting is right for you by visiting.
3. Be realistic.
4. Look at yourself. Even though you may not know what you want to do, use Career Crusing-username isabella, password mustang, to take career assessments.
5. Make sure that the college to which you apply offers your degree program. If you take classes at a junior college, do the STARS.
6. Don't forget about the jewels in our communities, which our are junior colleges. They offer great scholarships for entering freshman. Also, upon completing your 2 year requirements, transfer scholarships could offer you a full paid scholarship to finish your degree. Jeff State and WCCS have scholarship offerings for ACT scores staring in the 21 and 22 range.
7. January-Do the FAFSA. You will not be considered for any scholarship award at any college without it. I will try to host a FAFSA night in the computer lab in late January. You can bring your tax documents and do it here. I will have a person who is an expert in the field to help us.
8. Parents, encourage your senior to take the ACT. They have to do this if they are going to a 4 year university. They do not want to take this when they are 28 and have not had Algebra in 10 years.
9. Keep up your GPA. This is not the time to slack off.
10. Have fun. Be sure that your child has filled out a permission slip and returned it for our UAB field trip on December 16th. The students who have an ACT score have already been invited and given a permission slip. If you child has just registered for the ACT, just remind them to bring me a copy of their admissions ticket. I will also be sending out invites to those who just took it in October as soon as I get the scores.
There was so much more than what I can put in this narrow space. I look forward to doing this again next year.

Starting on November 8th through November 19th our yearbook sponsor, Ms. Amy Rhodes and her yearbook staff will be selling the yearbooks. A flier will be sent home with the students explaining the costs and accepted methods of payments. Do not miss this opportunity to purchase a great addition to your family archives. As a child, some of my fondest memories were getting my yearbook signed. My mom purchased one each year that my sister and I were in school. As we got older, she purchased one for each of us to have. I remember looking at my mom's yearbook, too. Now, I see how it inspired me to see her graduation memories so that I could make memories of my own. Times are tough, but a yearbook could be something that you could incorporate as part of your child's Christmas or allowance.

Fall Festival

Parents, don’t forget the Fall Festival is Tuesday night, October 26th, from 5:00 until 8:00. Everyone is invited to come out and have a great time! What a wonderful opportunity for good, clean, family fun, while supporting your school at the same time! Admission is free. Most activities should cost 50 cents, while a few may be $1. Homeroom teachers should have tickets available Monday and Tuesday for advance purchase. The tickets will be 50 cents each and may be used for any of the activities. Tickets will be sold Monday night at the festival as well. Most of the activities will be located in the elementary gym that is behind the school. Some of the activities for the night are cake walk, toy walk, face painting, tattoos, pumpkin patch, basketball toss, football toss, dish toss, Plinko, Go Fishing, Bean Bag toss, Wheel of Fortune, and hayride. Concessions such as hot dogs, pizza, candy bars, soft drinks, coffee, hot chocolate, etc. will be available as well. Make sure to dress your children warmly and come on out for a good time! As I had realized that I didn't have anything that I could wear in the building for colder weather, I have done some research in finding the cheapest online stores for a couple of my clothing items.So far, this is what I have. (Notice: I am not endorsing one store's service over the other, just the cheapest I could find.)WalMart.com-I found a non-hooded fleece jacket for $15.00 (I order men's medium in jackets)http://www.cheapestees.com-I found some cheap sweatshirts and long sleeve polos. (I order men's small in shirts)I have to admit, the least expensive items are in men's sizes. I have found they usually stay tucked in better and the sleeves are a little longer. Refer to an earlier post on in-town stores that are providing embroidery, uniform deals, etc. This is just Mrs. Ballew's investigation because the only place she can make it to once a week is the grocery store. We had a great visit from our resource officer, Mrs. Beth Hucks, last week. She reminded our 12th grade students of the legal ramifactions of school pranks and vandalism. I think that it is very important, as we enter the Halloween season, that students, facult, community members, and parents discuss the importance of avoiding legal problems such as trespassing, vandalism, and other legal issues that could be incurred with what would be called innocent "harmless" pranks. An arrest in high school could cause students many problems in the future.

The death or disabling injury of a parent in an on-the-job accident usually means that a family’s standard of living is permanently lowered. Kids’ Chance scholarships fund college tuition or technical training to young people whose parent or parents have been permanently disabled or killed on the job. Without help from Kids’ Chance, these young people might not have the opportunity to continue their education.Conceived by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar in 1992, Kids’ Chance is administered by the Alabama Law Foundation. Kids’ Chance scholarships are funded solely by contributions from corporations, organizations and individuals. To make the future secure for Kids’ Chance and to make larger scholarships available, the Alabama Law Foundation is building an endowment.Scholarships are announced once a year, and students may apply every year they attend classes. Scholarships range from $500 to $2500. Kids’ Chance has awarded more than 100 scholarships totaling over $375,000 to students studying in colleges and technical schools.
